Beginner Chinese

Course Objectives

  • Students learn the basic combinations of Chinese phonemes and to pronounce them correctly in terms of both articulation and also the four tones.
  • Students become skilled in basic oral communication through listening and speaking training to meet the demands of simple interpersonal dialogue, including: greeting, asking questions, self-introduction, etc.
  • Students learn elements and constructions of Chinese characters and become capable of writing 20-50 Chinese characters.
  • Students gain a better understanding of Chinese culture and society.

Target Audience

Absolute beginners in Chinese. No prior knowledge of Chinese language is assumed.

Intermediate Chinese

Course Objectives

  • To acquire basic pronunciation skills and speak and read in standard pronunciation of characters, words and fairly coherent sentences.
  • To meet the demands of daily Chinese communication in living, study and sociality.
  • To master the basic rules of grammar structure of Chinese.
  • To write simple sentences to express themselves.
  • To use the computer to input Chinese characters.

Target Audience

This course is designed for those who learned primary Chinese and have the elementary language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and expect in-depth learning Chinese pronunciation system and basic rules of grammar structure and improving Chinese listening and speaking skills.

Advanced Chinese

Course Objectives

  • Students are able to express their opinions properly and accurately on social, personal and economic topics.
  • Students can discuss social, personal and economic topics with Chinese speakers.
  • Students develop further abilities to read and write in the Chinese language.
  • Students have a more in-depth understanding of Chinese culture and society.

Target Audience

This course is designed for people who mastered fundamental Chinese grammar, and who possess intermediate Chinese skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

Course Duration

4 hours / week. 15 weeks total.

Chinese For Children

Fall term Chinese courses for children at Confucius Institute at Boğaziçi University which is organized in collaboration with BUYEM (Boğaziçi University Lifelong Learning Center) starts with 30 hours intensive courses.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Students learn the basic combinations of Chinese phonemes and to pronounce them correctly in terms of both articulation and also the four tones.
  • Students become skilled in basic oral communication through listening and speaking training to meet the demands of simple interpersonal dialogue, including: greeting, asking questions, self-introduction, etc.
  • Students learn elements and constructions of Chinese characters and become capable of writing 20-50 Chinese characters.
  • Students will learn Chinese basic grammars and write down simple sentences to explain themselves.
  • Students can typewrite Chinese characters with a computer.

Chinese Culture Courses

A Survey of China

This course outlines Chinese history, politics, diplomacy, economy, society, culture, education, science and technology, customs, and folklores, and further analyzes some specific issues, with a view to giving students a sketch of China’s overall situation. The main content includes China’s geographical location and its administrative division, China’s population and ethnic groups, a survey of China’s history, political systems, economic development, education, culture, customs, folklores, and diplomacy. Students will gain a fairly good knowledge of Chinese culture, economy and trade.

Taichi (Taiji)

This course will teach standard Tai Chi for beginners. Students will learn Tai Chi 24 Form. Students will also learn the basic knowledge of Wushu (Chinese Martial Arts), and will be trained in Tai Chi Push Hand techniques.

Chinese Calligraphy

This course will give students an introduction to Chinese calligraphy. Students will learn how to handle the brush, how to practice strokes and lines and how to use graph paper. Students will learn the basic techniques required for writing a Chinese character and will be able to practice these techniques in class.

Classic Chinese Paintings

This course will give students an introduction to Chinese painting. Students will learn how to handle the brush and prepare the ink. Students will practice painting in black and colour, and will be able to practice these techniques in class.

Chinese Culinary Art.

This course introduces Chinese people’s dietary habits , preferences and 8 major cuisines of completely different tastes, focusing on the materials they use, the slice skill and their typical cooking requirements, through which you will enjoy a good view of the dishes in attractive color, vivid shape and appealing taste. This course also recommends you how to cook some home-style dishes.

Business Chinese

This course is designed for increasing students’ command of common business terms in modern Chinese and some related knowledge about Chinese society and culture and cultivating their communicative skills in a Chinese business setting. It mainly consists of the following topics: meeting, business discussion, price negotiation, ordering, payment, goods delivery, shipping, insurance, contracting, claim, agency and cooperative management.

Teaching Methodology for Chinese Language Teachers

This course is designed to equip participants with the framework and skills to teach Chinese as a second language. The participants will learn to synergize the various pedagogic strategies in order to suit specific teaching objectives.This course introduces the historical development and current situation of teaching Chinese as a second foreign language, its linguistic, educational, psychological and cultural basis, the basic concepts and relevant research of language acquisition theories, and the major schools of the methodology of second language teaching. With this introduction, students can have a good command of the TCFL theories, know about the purpose and principles of TCFL, be able to apply the theories to practical classroom teaching, and command the main methods of curriculum design, textbook selection and compilation, language testing, and the teaching of Chinese pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and Chinese characters.

Turkish Training Course for Chinese

  • To acquire basic pronunciation skills and speak and read in standard pronunciation of Turkish.
  • To master the basic rules of grammar structure of Turkish.
  • To meet the demands of daily Turkish communication in living, study and sociality.

(HSK/BCT/YCT) Intensive Chinese Courses

This course is designed for HSK/BCT/YCT candidates, mainly introducing the requirements, pattern, and content of HSK /BCT/YCT. Specifically, it elaborates on the patterns, scope, and major points in listening comprehension, grammar and structure, reading comprehension, and blank-filling. On this basis, it intends to improve the students’ performance in the test through specified and comprehensive exercises.
