Chinese New Year’s Celebration at Confucius Institute of Boğaziçi University

January 30, 2013, at the eve of the Chinese New Year, Confucius Institute at Boğaziçi University (CIBU) organized a series of programs to celebrate the coming of the new year. More than 100 faculties, staffs, students and local residents attended the celebration. Provost and Board Chairman of CIBU Prof. Ali Teqcan and Consul General of PRC in Istanbul Mr. Zhang Qingyang presented and had addresses respectively.
The celebration started at 2pm (8pm at Beijing time), with Spring Festival Gala from CCTV and a workshop on dumpling. Book exhibition, Chinese calligraphy and tea art are also prepared in the corridor of Confucius Institute. At 5:30, the formal party began. Volunteer teachers and Chinese exchange students had a lion dance. Turkish Director Prof. Arzu Özturkmen welcomed all and introduced the honorable guests. Provost Ali Teqcan and Consul General Zhang Qingyang addressed respectively on behalf of Boğaziçi University and the Consulate General of PRC in Istanbul. With the fireworks announcing the new year’s coming, all guests joined the reception of dumplings. After that, the Chinese faculties and students showed some performances; Turkish students and residents also joined at the end of the party.
As the most important traditional festivals in China, the Chinese New Year has becoame a living symbol for local students and residents to know China and Chinese culture. It is also the beginning of the fifth anniversary of Confucius Institute at Boğaziçi University.
